A: Rakhi is celebrated all over the world among Hindus in the mid-august every year. Rakha Bandhan is made up of two words Raksha means protection and Bandhan means bonding. If we talk about the ancient time every woman used to tie a thread on her husband wrist to always protect him from evil. With the passage of time this ritual started changing, she started tieing a thread on her brother’s wrist to protect him from evil and to strengthen the bond of love between the siblings. On this day the sister’s visit’s her brother’s home and perform his ‘pujan’ by applying kumkum and rice grain on his forehead. In return, the brother also promises her to protect her from every problem. The same ritual is carried in today’s time also, and if the sister is unable to visit her brother’s home she sends rakhi to him and in return, the brother sends a gift to her.

 There are many stories about the origin of this festival. But the most popular story according to Hindu mythology is about Lord Krishna and Draupadi. One day while cutting sugarcane Lord Krishna cut his little finger and it started bleeding. Rukmani, Lord Krishna wife immediately sent a guard to bring some bandage. Meanwhile, Draupadi who was there watching the whole incident came and tied his finger with a small part of her sari. In return, Lord Krishna promised her that he will help her whenever she will be in need. He fulfilled his promise when she was in need during the Mahabharata.
